Collections

North Lanarkshire Council Archives holds over 140 collections including the records of local authorities, landed estates, businesses, clubs and societies, and personal papers.
More specifically, the Archives provides access to the records of all of the former burghs in what is now North Lanarkshire (e.g. Airdrie, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, Motherwell and Wishaw) and to the historical records of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation.

In terms of local landed estates, the Archives looks after material relating to Hamilton of Dalzell (currently housed at Motherwell Heritage Centre), Drumpellier and Cumbernauld.

The Archives is also home to a number of business collections, which provide evidence of the rich industrial heritage of the area.  Notable collections include the records of William Baird & Co, at one time the largest ironworks in Scotland; Anderson Boyes & Co Ltd, producers of mining equipment; and Thomas Hudson & Co Ltd, manufacturers of boilers and structural ironworks.

Records of societies and clubs reflect the wide range of political, cultural, social and leisure activities carried out in North Lanarkshire, and there are several collections of papers of private individuals and families as well as the North Lanarkshire and Monklands Photographic Collections.

Archives can be viewed at the centre, although pre-booking is essential.
