Calder man has his local history collection on show

MR John White, Calder works, who has established himself as a botanist and local historian over the past 20 years, is hoping present and former employees can help boost his collection of items and information which depicts the history of Stewarts and Lloyds, in Scotland.

John, who is head of the job time department, has worked at Calder for 32 years.

He became interested in botany 20 years ago because of his father who had been born and brought up in the country. His interest in local history followed close afterwards when John found he had time to spare during the winter months.

As far as local history is concerned, John began by collecting old maps and books and, seven years ago, he was invited by the local Rotarians to put his bulging collection on display.

Soon after, the local authority offered John a permanent site for his collection in Coatbridge Public Library, and it is known as The John White local history collection.

The collection comprises old maps, local publications such as magazines and newspapers, portraits of prominent people as well as archaeological finds in the area. In addition, there are 1,000 colour transparencies taken by Mr White.

For the past 15 years Mr White has been a member of the Andersonian Naturalists of Glasgow, a well-known and long established botanical and geological association. He is also past president of the Monklands Historical Society.

As well as maintaining and adding to his collection, Mr White also gives lectures on his subjects to local organisations. He is also kept busy in the summer months by organising botanical and historical outings. Also, he takes local schoolchildren on nature rambles.

"At the moment I have a small collection of books and photographs concerning Stewarts and Lloyds. If any employees have anything about the company which might be of interest to the collection I would very much like to hear from them," said Mr White
