The
grandsons of two of the
most famous figures in
Scottish boxing history
are set to go into
partnership next month –
75 years after their
grandfathers first
linked up.
Chris Gilmour and Carlo
Rea of Gilroy Promotions
will stage a joint
promotion at Motherwell
Concert Hall on Friday,
May 16.
Gilmour is grandson of
legendary boxing manager
Tommy Gilmour Senior,
who managed Rea's
grandfather, former
Scottish middleweight
and light-heavyweight
champion Bert Gilroy
from 1933 onwards.
Coatbridge-born Gilroy –
who lost just 29 of his
238 fights across a 17
year career that ended
in 1950 – became only
the second Scot, after
Ken Buchanan, to be
inducted into the World
Boxing Hall of Fame in
Los Angeles in 2006.
Jointly topping the bill
of the Gilmour/Gilroy
promotion will be
undefeated welterweight
Paul Burns of Uddingston
and lightweight Martin
Watson of Coatbridge.
Gilmour said: “My
grandfather died in 1979
and Carlo's in 1998, but
I'm sure they'd both be
delighted that we're
reviving the family
links with this joint
promotion.
“There aren't too many
families across the
world who have a boxing
heritage which goes back
as far as the Gilmours
and Gilroys and I've no
doubt the joint
promotion will be
another huge success for
both families.
“It's sure to be a great
show and Paul and Martin
will both get richly
deserved shots at
International British
Masters titles.”
Rea, who launched Gilroy
Promotions in 2006 along
with his brother Mario,
added: “My grandfather
never got a British
title shot because he
was one of the most
avoided men of his era,
but his name is still
recognised by boxing
fans across the world.
“We launched Gilroy
Promotions to keep his
name alive, but I don't
think anyone ever
imagined that we'd link
up again with a member
of the Gilmour family.
I'm sure the show will
be a memorable and
emotional night for
everyone involved.”
Coatbridge
light-middleweight
prospect Chris Black and
undefeated Motherwell
light-welterweight Paul
‘Charlie' King will both
feature on the undercard
as well as Paisley's
undefeated
light-middleweight
Steven Weir
