About digital TV

with thanks to Ricability

http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/

By 2012 all TV viewers living in the UK will be watching digital TV. The idea is that we’ll all benefit from a greater choice of channels, programmes and new services, such as interactivity and audio description for people with sight loss.

Most households are already getting digital TV – but maybe not all the services it offers. After switchover, almost everywhere will be able to receive digital terrestrial television.

In the very few places where the signal will not be received by aerial even after your region has switched, your choice will be limited to satellite or cable/phone line services.

If you currently receive just the traditional five UK channels (BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, Channel 4 and Five) – or only some of them – on any of your TV sets, you’ll need to think about your options for getting digital TV. Every TV set you want to keep watching in your home will need to be converted or upgraded to digital.  Whenever and however you go digital, you’ll still get the traditional channels – BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5. But you will also be able to receive many more, including the new BBC, ITV and Channel 4 channels you may have seen advertised, and digital radio channels via your TV.

How do I get set for digital?

First you need to choose how you want to receive your TV signal;

  • Through an aerial (via either a digital box or digital TV)
  • Through a satellite dish
  • Through a cable
  • Through a telephone line

How do I know what to buy?

You don’t need to replace your existing TV unless you want to but you will need a digital box (via aerial, satellite dish or cable).

However if you are thinking of upgrading your current set consider getting a TV with a digital box built in (a “digital TV”) and look for the 'digital tick’ logo. This special logo, known as the "digital tick", has been developed as a certification mark to help consumers through switchover.

The logo on digital TV products and services looks like this:

The logo is designed to:

  1. Identify digital TV products (e.g. integrated digital TV sets, digital boxes and digital television recorders/PVRs) that are designed to work through switchover.
  2. Identify digital TV services (e.g. Sky, Freeview, Virgin Media) that are designed to work through switchover.

And don’t forget your video recorder: If you use a video (VCR) or a DVD recorder for recording you will still be able to record and play back tapes/DVDs as before. But, if you want to record one digital channel while you are watching another, you'll need a digital TV recorder with one or more digital tuners (Freeview Playback, Sky+ or ntl: Telewest TV Drive).

Look for the 'digital tick’ logo which certifies products and services that are designed to keep working after switchover.

Stores displaying ‘get set for digital’ will stock certified products.
